Black Dog Flower Co. is a seasonal cut flower farm and year-round floral design studio located in southern Michigan. We grow cut flowers during the season and use as many as we can in our wedding designs. When the flowers are not blooming, we supplement with other local growers and national wholesalers. We design lush garden style bouquets and arrangements with a lot of textures and movement, and experimenting with color is our favorite. Nature inspires all that we do, which means we take care of our soil, the birds, bees, and butterflies, and in return, we grow amazing healthy flowers for our souls.

Wedding design is the crux of our business. We differentiate our floral design studio by growing many of the flowers in your wedding bouquets and arrangements here on our farm, especially for you! When booking your wedding in the fall and winter, I am also keeping lists of flower colors to grow, colors from years past to cut, and new varieties to add. Do I need to grow more white dahlias, or a double crop of apricot strawflower and terracotta celosia? Do I need to plant sunflowers so that they are blooming for Sept. 13th? Maybe we can cut out the burgundy dahlias and use the space to add in more peach? Lucky for me, the floral industry is seeing a shift to more colorful wedding palettes and I AM HERE FOR IT. The colors and varieties of flower seeds are endless. All of your floral wedding dreams directly impact my farm plan and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

The perfect scenario for me is to find wedding couples that love my design style, embrace and prefer locally grown flowers, have a more diverse color palette, and are open to a variety of flowers and textures. One of the greatest feeling for me as a business owner is when a client finds me and is drawn to the fact that we use local flowers. I feel that I do my best work when the blooms come from the farm and I am free to use my creativity to design something unique for my couples. It is the greatest honor to be trusted with this and it is truly my dream to have a wedding portfolio full of happy couples holding lush bouquets of locally grown flowers. And don’t get me wrong, I love a neutral and classic color palette, it means I get to explore new flowers and textures to make your bouquet unique to you.

One of the most recent weddings I had the pleasure of designing was a sweet couple that found me through a family friend, and they wanted ALL THE COLORS. Wait, what!? Ok, the perfect client. They came out to the farm and saw all the flowers, and as we walked around and snipped flowers, I asked, “this color?” Yes. “This color?” Yes. They passed the test and truly wanted ALL THE COLORS. Well, as any artist knows…all the colors don’t actually play nice. I was up for the challenge to find the specific recipe of ‘all the colors’ that looked incredible. (Brown Sugar Dahlia, you did not make the cut). My first attempt was not mind blowing, but my second attempt, was so good. Even I can admit when I nail it. Emily and Brian were the most perfect, easy going, ‘I trust you’ clients, and I’m truly grateful I was able to be a part of the beautifully planned and uniquely theirs, wedding day. Getting to know clients and bringing their floral visions to life makes me so happy, and if we can use local flowers while doing it, it makes it even sweeter.
